I grew up eating cream of wheat cereal. Back then, it was smothered with butter and milk and I still remember adding more brown sugar to my bowl when my grandmother was not looking. Then I would dive right in and just love the sweet, creamy taste of that hot cereal.
I recently had the nostalgia of wanting a bowl of a warm, sweet, and creamy cereal. I avoid eating gluten for myself so anything with wheat was not going to happen. We do eat oatmeal from time to time but this was not going to hit the spot the same way cream of wheat did. After looking in the oatmeal section of my favorite grocery store, I found a bag of organic brown rice farina, or hot cereal.
The recipe calls for soaking the brown rice overnight in an acidic base. I take this step as I've read in a number of cookbooks as well as health related sites and magazines that by soaking grains, this may make it more possible for the body to absorb nutrients from the rice.
I wanted to add as few ingredients to this hot cereal yet come up with a bowl full of sweet goodness and found ground cinnamon and maple syrup did just the trick. Pair this with your favorite sausage or sautéed greens for a filling and stick to your ribs kind of breakfast!
